One child killed, one badly injured in Wilton crash
21 JanWILTON — An 11-year-old boy died Friday afternoon when his mother, who was driving the van they were in, struck a pickup truck head-on along Corinth Mountain Road, police said.
The boy, James Eggleston, of Corinth, was in a 2007 Dodge Caravan with three other passengers, his siblings.
Police said his mother, Shiho Price, 39, was speeding. Road conditions also contributed to the accident, State Police Sgt. John Bellavigna said.
Price was driving eastbound around 4:09 p.m., about a mile and a half from the Route 9 intersection, when her van went out of her lane and collided with a Ford F-150, police said.
James was pronounced dead on scene, and a 3-year-old in his vehicle was seriously injured, having head and arm injuries.
The child was taken by helicopter to Albany Medical Center.
Price and her two other children, a 14-year-old girl and 2-year-old boy, were treated and released from Albany Medical Center.
The pickup truck driver, James F. Pittelli, 22, of Corinth, had no injuries, and his passenger had a minor arm injury, which was treated at the scene of the crash.
Price was ticketed with imprudent speed and failure to keep right.
Everyone involved in the crash was wearing seatbelts and proper safety restraints, police said.
An autopsy on Eggleston was being conducted Saturday.
Trooper James Creede and Investigator John Deyette investigated the accident, assisted by State Police, the State Police accident reconstruction unit and Wilton fire and emergency medical officials.

Fire destroys empty South Glens Falls house
19 DecSOUTH GLENS FALLS — Fire destroyed an unoccupied residence early Sunday on the corner of Saratoga and Baker avenues.
The South Glens Falls Fire Company was called just before 6 a.m. to respond to the home at 113 Saratoga Ave. Assistant Chief Kyle Smith said he arrived on the scene to find flames shooting from all sides of the building.
“It had a head start on us,” he said.
Due to the severity of the fire and problems with water pressure, it took a half-hour to knock down the flames; crews remained on the scene for almost six hours.
Smith said the rental property was empty at the time of the incident, and may be a vacant building. Fire officials were still trying to get information from the landlord.
No one was hurt in the incident.
It’s believed the fire started in the basement. Smith said he doesn’t believe arson was involved, but the cause is under investigation,
The Wilton, West Glens Falls, Fort Edward, Gansevoort, South Queensbury, Kingsbury and Maple Avenue fire companies provided mutual aid.

Not wasting any time: Wilton firefighters look forward to new station slated for completion in January or February
4 OctBy PAUL POST
ppost@saratogian.com
WILTON — Firefighters hope to move into their new Station 2, now under construction on Route 50, by late January or February.
The 10,000-square-foot, $2.5 million structure will reduce response times on the east side of Wilton, where the department is also trying to recruit new members.
The new station, with three drive-through bays, is located directly across from the Living Waters Church of God on Route 50.
“This has all got to be blacktopped by the end of this month,” board of fire commissioners chairman John Liptak said as he surveying the parking lot area. “It’s a pre-engineered building. It’s all designed at the factory.”
The main fire station is on Ballard Road, west of Northway Exit 16 and railroad tracks that cut through the middle of town.
The new station should cut response times nearly in half for incidents in eastern Wilton, such as a Louden Road blaze that destroyed Kenneth Dooley’s residence in late June.
“That was 7-1/2 miles from the station on Ballard Road,” Liptak said. “It’s only four miles from here.”
Plus, the new station will eliminate potential delays from long, slow-moving freight trains passing through town.
Liptak said he doesn’t recall ever waiting for a train, but a railroad gate malfunctioned once a couple of years ago, causing a 15- to 20-minute delay, he said.
The new station is also needed to meet demand from continued residential and commercial growth on the east side of town. Rolling Greens subdivision, with more than 30 lots, is currently under way on Edie Road, and the 18-lot Floral Estates and 21-lot Pine Brook Landing are proposed for Ingersol Road.
There is also a new commercial building at the southwest corner of Edie Road and Route 50 that’s expected to have a mix of business and office tenants.
The new station is costing almost as much as the main one, which is twice as large, because of rising labor and material costs in the past 10 years. However, the new station won’t increase Wilton Fire District taxes because bonding for the old station, which opened in 2002, expires next year, Liptak said.
Payments previously allotted for the old station will now be applied to the new one, he said.
The new station will house an engine rescue vehicle, an engine tanker and a brush truck. The main station will still have an engine rescue vehicle, two tankers, a ladder truck, one pickup truck and one brush truck.
There are no plans to purchase additional vehicles for either station, Liptak said.
Station 2 will have space for gear lockers, a radio room, a kitchen/lounge, a chief’s office and mechanical and storage rooms.
The building, on 2-1/2 acres, was designed by C.T. Male Associates of Latham. The frame, with 72-foot trusses, and exterior is being done by Morton Builders. Interior finish work will be done by Gallo Construction.
Belmont Builders donated 12,000 yards of fill needed to grade the 2-1/2-acre site, Liptak said.
